Back 2 Hockey sessions are fun, sociable and informal and aimed at people who either haven’t played hockey for a number of years or who are looking to play for the first time. It’s also an opportunity to get fitter, as each Back2Hockey session burns up to 450 calories apparently according to netfit.co.uk. Along the way you will also make new friends.
Don’t worry if you’re nervous or don’t remember any rules, our coaches will gently guide you through the fun and friendly sessions. We promise it’s nothing like the school days of muddy pitches and standing around waiting for a touch of the ball.
For many busy parents, fitting in sport alongside other commitments can be a challenge. We have the perfect answer with our sessions now running alongside our Junior training sessions which is for boys and girls aged 5-13. Back2Hockey is open to men now too - so it can be a real family affair. When our club opened to boys and men in 2018, one Back2Hockey member pulled in her husband and daughter and we now have several families spread across the various sections.
This video just sums up the ethos of Back 2 Hockey.
Testimonials
Elaine Danson our previous 2nd team Goalkeeper joined us through our Back to Hockey sessions:
“I used to really enjoy playing in my youth (20 years ago!) but gave it up due to playing a lot of badminton. I'm not playing as much now and was looking for something else. I'd been wanting to have another bash at hockey for a while and when I saw B2H advertised I thought I'd better have a go before I get too old!”
Elaine added “Garstang was the only club I saw advertising B2H. Garstang are obviously a successful club and are passionate about the sport. The sessions were great because they are informal and friendly. I felt no pressure to be up to a standard to play, it didn't matter that I couldn't hit a ball or how unfit I am.”
Sarah, a regular Back2Hockey participant, talks openly; "I have struggled with health and fitness since having a child 4 years ago which also affected my self-esteem and confidence. Discovering these sessions has had a really positive impact on my life. I have progressively gained strength, lost weight, am regaining fitness and it has kick started me into additional activity with NHS’s Couch to 5k. I am not alone and the other ladies are similarly reaping the benefits of coming back to sport after decades out and whom would otherwise have been put off. We all look forward to Tuesday evening each week and one Mum of four described it as her “favourite hour of the week”.
